Chandrayaan-3: ISRO Chief Announces Launch Date for India’s Moon Mission

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has officially announced that Chandrayaan-3, the country’s third lunar mission, is scheduled for launch on July 13. ISRO Chairman, S. Somnath, made the announcement, revealing that the launch window for the mission extends until July 19.

Speculations regarding the launch date had been circulating unofficially until now. Somnath addressed these rumors, stating that the official date had not been finalized. Speaking to the media in Delhi, he shared, “The launch window is available from July 13-19. We hope to carry out the experiment on the first day.”

Chandrayaan-3 will utilize the GSLV M-3 rocket for the mission, which is currently in its final stages of preparation. The primary objective of the mission is to achieve a soft landing on the lunar surface. The spacecraft will consist of a Lander-Rover combination, while the orbiter from Chandrayaan-2, launched in 2019, will be repurposed for Chandrayaan-3.

If successful, India will become the fourth country to accomplish a soft landing on the moon, following the United States, Russia, and China. Chandrayaan-2, which aimed to explore the South Pole of the Moon, encountered a setback during its landing phase but still has an operational orbiter. India’s previous lunar mission, Chandrayaan-1, launched in 2008, successfully detected water traces on the lunar surface but ceased functioning prematurely.

The upcoming Chandrayaan-3 mission represents a significant milestone in India’s space research endeavors. The country’s pursuit of a successful moon landing is a testament to its growing capabilities in space exploration.
