Yamuna River Reaches Dangerous Levels, Threatening the Capital

Delhi is currently facing a severe flood situation as the Yamuna River swells to unprecedented levels, posing a significant threat to the capital city. Heavy rains have caused the river to rise dangerously, surpassing the previous record and causing widespread inundation in many parts of Delhi. The floodwaters have even reached near the residence of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

As of 9 am on Thursday, the water level of the Yamuna River near the old railway bridge in Delhi stood at a staggering 208.51 meters, surpassing the dangerous mark by three meters. This marks the first time in history that the river has reached such alarming levels. The Central Water Commission warns that the water level may rise further as heavy rains continue to release floodwaters downstream from Hatnikund in Haryana.

The situation is being closely monitored, and the Central Water Commission has issued a warning that the conditions could become “extremely dangerous” if the water level continues to rise. However, there are indications that the release of water from the Haryana barrage may decrease from 2 pm today.

The flooding has led to significant disruptions across the city, with roads and residential areas being submerged in knee-deep water. The civil lines area, including the ring road, has been severely affected, and traffic has come to a standstill. The floodwaters have also reached the Delhi Secretariat, located just 500 meters away from Chief Minister Kejriwal’s residence.

In response to the flood threat, authorities have deployed 12 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for relief operations. Thousands of people residing in low-lying areas have been evacuated to safer zones. As a precautionary measure, all public and private schools in the flood-affected areas have been temporarily closed.

The flooding has caused disruptions in the water supply, with three water treatment plants in Delhi temporarily shut down. Chief Minister Kejriwal has expressed concerns about potential drinking water shortages in certain areas. Traffic restrictions have been imposed in various locations, and the Yamuna Bank Metro Station has been closed.

The northern region of the country has also witnessed heavy rains and subsequent flooding. In Himachal Pradesh, approximately 90 people have lost their lives in flood-related incidents, while Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab have reported 12, 21, and 21 casualties, respectively. Additionally, Uttarakhand has experienced landslides triggered by the incessant rains, leading to the closure of several national highways.

The authorities are working diligently to manage the flood situation in Delhi and provide assistance to affected individuals. People are advised to exercise caution and follow instructions from local authorities to ensure their safety during this challenging time.
